The New Bedford Historical Society (NBHS) is dedicated to documenting and celebrating the history, legacy and presence of African Americans, Cape Verdeans, Native Americans, West Indians and other people of color in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The society is headquartered in the Nathan and Polly Johnson House, a National Historic Landmark noted for its link to the Underground Railroad, and the first free home of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The NBHS takes a leadership role in scholarship and public programs on the Underground Railroad and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment, is proactive in cultural and historical collaborations in New Bedford, and is working to restore the Johnson House. The society is also one of the founding members of the Mass History Alliance.
