This session explores how volunteer researchers from the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands worked with author Stephanie Schorow to transcribe, research, and annotate a journal kept by four women who stayed on a remote Boston Harbor island in 1891. The methodology for A Boston Harbor Islands Adventure: The Great Brewster Journal of 1891 (History Press) could be a model for similar endeavors. Hartman Deetz (Mashpee Wampanoag) and former Wayside Inn Education Coordinator Katina Fontes will share stories of the trust-building and partnership involved in the six-day process of burning a dugout canoe for The Mishoon Project at The Wayside Inn in 2022. Although the site has traditionally focused on colonial history presented through a white lens, the speakers overcame challenges to foster collaboration with Indigenous groups.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”Speaker Section” _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” background_color=”rgba(9,38,74,0.21)” custom_padding=”0px||0px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_3,1_3,1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” width=”67%” custom_padding=”5px||4px|||” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_cta title=”Katina Fontes” button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wcm9qZWN0Iiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjgxNjQifX0=@” button_text=”Click Here” admin_label=”Speaker 1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” _module_preset=”default” header_font=”|700|||||||” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#299511″ background_layout=”light” width=”100%” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Athina Education, Inc.

[/et_pb_cta][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.17.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_cta title=”Hartman Deetz” button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wcm9qZWN0Iiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjgxNTgifX0=@” button_text=”Click Here” admin_label=”Speaker 1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” _module_preset=”default” header_font=”|700|||||||” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#299511″ background_layout=”light” width=”100%” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Mashpee Wampanoag

[/et_pb_cta][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_3″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_cta title=”Stephanie Schorow” button_url=”@ET-DC@eyJkeW5hbWljIjp0cnVlLCJjb250ZW50IjoicG9zdF9saW5rX3VybF9wcm9qZWN0Iiwic2V0dGluZ3MiOnsicG9zdF9pZCI6IjgxODgifX0=@” button_text=”Click Here” admin_label=”Speaker 1″ _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _dynamic_attributes=”button_url” _module_preset=”default” header_font=”|700|||||||” header_letter_spacing=”-1px” background_color=”RGBA(255,255,255,0)” custom_button=”on” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#299511″ background_layout=”light” width=”100%” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]

Journalist and Author

[/et_pb_cta][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

2023 Mass History Conference Collaborating for Inclusive History: Working With Volunteers to Develop Historic Programming T11:15am – 12:30pm, June 5, 2022 Image courtesy of The Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag.Historic diaries, journals, and scrapbooks can be great sources for publications, displays, and programming but they often lack context.
