With the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party in December 2023 and the Semiquincentennial in 2026, this revival of “Scenes from the Revolution” is available now for school and community group performances across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and beyond. All resources are available for download free-of-charge and without restriction. “Scenes from the Revolution” – music, lyrics and book by Aline Shader, was written in 1975 for her students at Bowen Elementary School in Newton Centre MA to enhance their understanding of the American Revolution and to celebrate the Bicentennial in 1976.
Synopsis: “Scenes from the Revolution” tells the story of the American Revolution through a series of musical numbers and historical scenes from the Boston Tea Party to the signing of Declaration of Independence. It also explores the struggle for freedom and self-determination through songs such as, “Pass It On,” “One If By Land” and “The Whigs and the Tories.” “The Letter” and “The Promise” are powerful and emotive songs that highlight the sacrifices made. This engaging musical, with ten scenes and ten songs – intended to be performed by 5th – 8th graders, provides a unique perspective on the American Revolution and is a wonderful way to learn about this pivotal period in American history.
Many of Aline’s students, who are now 35 – 65 years old, say that what they remember about the American Revolution was learned from this musical – and they still sing the songs today!
About SONGS CHILDREN SING: https://songschildrensing.com celebrates the music of Aline Shader (1936-2002), who was a beloved teacher in the Newton MA Public Schools from the late 60s – early 80s, and an artist-in-residence in Boston-area schools through the late 90s. The website is a catalog of 40+ songs (for all ages), each with an abundance of resources, available for download free-of-charge and without restriction. Aline loved the sound of young voices, the smiles on young faces and the joy that comes from singing together. She believed in the power of music to build confidence, spur imagination, and foster the unity that singing together brings.
